SYNOPSIS:
The coveted 'Saraswati Award' for 1970 is presented to Dr. Bhaskar Bannerjee(Amitabh Bachchan) for his maiden work as a novelist. Bhaskar recieves high compliments for his portrayal of a most interesting and conventional character. Whilst accepting the award, Bhaskar reveals that the character in his novel is not fictitious but is actually based in a real person named Anand Saigal. Anand(Rajesh Khanna) who was suffering from an incurable disease called lymphocircoma, first came to Dr. Prakash Kulkarni(Ramesh Deo), a close friend of Bhaskar. Prakash tells Bhaskar about his reluctance to take Anand as his patient, but after meeting anand, he was astonished that a dying man could have such a wonderful zest for life and happiness. Could such a man be aware of that, medically he was under a death sentence. Anand not only knew about his fate but was fully determined to enjoy every moment of the reminder of his life. He refused to wither away in a gloomy hospital room but rather chose to spend his last days in happiness with his friends. When death came, Anand's friends realized that life was not over, for joy that Anand had so generously spread would live on and be the medium of his immortality.
