Ram Prasad(Amol Palekar), a young chartered accountant and his sister Ratna, are orphans living in Bombay. One morning, an old family friend, Dr. Kedar, comes to visit him with information about a very well-paid job being advertised by Bhavani Shankar, the owner of Urmila Trading Corporation, who happens to be Dr. Kedars personal friend also. Bhavani(Utpal Dutt) approves of this moustached man and gives him the job. Ram is happy with his new job, but for the kurta and the oil. Bhavani Shankar is an eccentric who believes that youth should have no interests beyond work and industry and so Ram knows that he cannot ask to leave to watch the India-Pakistan cricket match. With the aid of his friends, he arranges to go to the match saying his mother is ill. Unfortunately for Ram, Bhavani notices him at the stadium. On demand of an explanation, Ram blurts out that the person seen was not he, but his twin brother Laxman Prasad who is clean-shaven. Bhavani gives Laxman the job of teaching his daughter music. Rams life becomes one frantic run-around: as Ram with a false moustache he attends the office; as clean-shaven Laxman he spends the evening teaching the bosss daughter. The inevitable complication occurs when Urmila(Bindiya Goswami, Bhavani Shankars daughter) falls in love with Laxman. Meanwhile, Bhavani demands to meet Rams mother, who like Laxman is non-existent. Life is going steady until one day his moustache falls off !
